Does it matter to you… what we do at SHORT SHEEP?
A sustainable approach to the management of the SHORT SHEEP Vineyard …
all aspects of producing and selling our wines is important to us.
We have adopted the following practices:
An integrated pest management system in the Vineyard.
Graze short sheep all year & crash graze cows during the winter in the vineyard, thereby reducing diesel consumption and the use of herbicides.
Spread organic fertilisers, humate & Seasol.
Feed grape marc to cows to…
SHORT SHEEP follow ‘organic’ ‘sustainable’ & ‘integrated’ (permaculture)” principles as far as we can…
This is not an ‘either/or’ approach ‘organic/bio-dynamic vs non-organic’.
We are pragmatic when systemic approaches are more effective, where prevention is better than cure and cause the least damage (eg avoiding weekly copper sprays using diesel & compacting soil from tractor use).
10 Point SHORT SHEEP Manifesto
1. Soil is everything, its biota – the flora, fauna and fungi – are treated with respect.
2. Well balanced soil composition and…
Sustainable Management of the SHORT SHEEP Vineyard
Our Southdown Babydoll sheep regarded as part of the team…
and are an integral component to the long term sustainable management of our vineyard.
Grazing underneath the vines, they reduce the need for herbicides to manage the vine undergrowth, de-succur the vines and reduce the requirement to slash in between the rows and the need for diesel fuel.
Babydoll Southdown Breed
Southdown sheep originated from the South Downs of Southern England…
They arrived in Australia on the First…
Preservative Free Shiraz
Produced using no sulfur throughout the wine-making, process the Preservative Free Shiraz spends 3 months in new French Oak barrels prior to bottling.
Please note a bottle should be consumed within 2 days.
To be determined ‘Preservative Free” wine is required to have less than 10 parts per million of free sulfur.
Sulfurs are tested by an independent laboratory and are undetectable.

SHORT SHEEP’s 10 Acre Single Vineyard…
was established in 2002 by Head Ram & Ewe.
The SHORT SHEEP vineyard grows Shiraz, Cabernet & Merlot varietals.
We carefully select small parcels of white fruit from the district from vineyards with a similar sustainable philosophy where we are able to handpick.
So why do we handpick all our grapes?
MOG is ‘Material Other than Grapes’ or ‘Muck’ !
To our suprise (and initial disgust) MOG ends up in machinery harvest bins. That includes, leaves twigs, caterpillars,…
Head Ram & Ewe ~ Tony & Sue, passionately debate & produce small batches of wines
The challenge of making good wines in a sustainable manner, that people enjoy, is at the core of what we do.
Our approach to wine making is simple: to create wines in SHORT SHEEP’s Micro-Winery, that reflect the variety and quality of fruit our Mudgee vineyard produces or parcels of fruit carefully selected from the district.
We prefer our wines to speak to you for themselves,…
