In the summertime when the weather is hot
You can stretch right up and touch the sky
When the weather’s fine
You got women, you got women on your mind
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find
Sadly, the only thing on our mind at the moment is rain! After the late vintage and Autumn rains of April, May & June Mudgee is looking as dry and scorched as we can recall since we arrived back in 2001.
We’ve been eking out the meager rainfall collected in our main dam and have now had to tap into for the first time the deeper waters of the original back dam. Thankfully, our new solar bore pump is installed and operating, but rather than gushing it trickles away at less than a litre a second, so without any rain it will be almost a year until our main vineyard water source will be replenished.
Thankfully, despite a few late chilly mornings no frosts have impacted the vineyard although we looked on helplessly as a hail storm skirted the vineyard a few weeks ago. A few battered and bruised leaves but no major damage.
Fruit set is looking good this year, particularly in the Merlot block which has been receiving significant TLC to improve its soil and a boost of micro-nutrients to the plants to assist with vigour and flowering. The next month or so now is the critical phase in the fruit development ahead of veraison – where the berries and soften and develop colour – but at least with low (no) rainfall disease pressure is also low.
